The Dilemna

Food Court

So- I went to the Mall of America with my friend Mary from Fit This Girl. We went to see the Human Do.ing. (See http://www.thecurvylife.com/2011/04/the-human-do-ing/ for more info!)

Once we were there- we did what all girls do… we shopped! LOL BUT at some point in the day-you know… we got hungry!

So… what are two fitness bloggers/health professionals supposed to do when faced with all the yummy smelling temptations of a Mall Food Court? Add in the fact that I was still in the middle of the detox and was focusing on trying to eat all Natural or Organic! UGH!

In the past- I would have quickly decided… Sbarro’s Pizza, or Maybe McDonald’s… (McDouble anyone?) or here in this food court they have a A&W- Hot Dogs and Tater Tots! oh yeah! Oh wait… OH NO!

There is a great book series called Eat This, Not That. They are written in short easy little snippets, easy to understand and very very interesting. You will read this and really understand how bad the majority of Fast Food is for you.

So- what did I choose? I chose a Kid’s Taco Meal at Chipotle. I felt like Chipotle’s committment to sustainable, organic and local foods was the best choice for me and my detox plan this month. The calories were not super low- but I could afford them that day- and sometimes you have to make a choice! (I also had a decaf tea latte- at both Caribou and Starbucks that day too! I REALLY wanted coffee- but again… the detox! LOL)

So, how do you make good food choices on the go?

What is your favorite Go-To meal when you are out and about?

How do you decide what to eat when you need to eat out and fast?

  1. Honestly, I try and stick with Subway. With school being right around dinner time, it’s too early to eat before I go, and too late to eat when I get home. MOST of the time, I bring something from home…usually a “Smart Ones” frozen dinner, but there are occasions where I don’t and eating out is the only option. Hawaii, like the South, deep fries EVERYTHING…it’s CRAZY! There is McD’s, L&L BBQ, Jack-in-the-Box, and all kinds of other unhealthy options right near our building…so I do my best on those nights to make it to Subway before they close and stick with the 6g or less meals. Their flatbread sandwiches…OMG! YUM!! LOL <3

I have been eating so well lately that when I went shopping with Auntie the other day and we faced the same dilemma… BUT, nothing in the food court even appealed to me. Everything smelled so greasy and it turned my tummy. We decided to go to Friendly’s because they have a promo out: they are changing their menu to provide healthier choices. And now that they show the calorie count it is easier to choose. I too didn’t do well on the calorie end, but I stuck to the food in my plan. Here is to little victories! Cheers!

  3. I try to find a Subway or WW Applebee’s menu is great too!
